RJC in the News

The Republican Jewish Coalition is making waves across the country, working hard for Republican success through significant and hard-hitting TV ads, an aggressive get out the vote campaign, and speaking out loudly and clearly about the importance and meaning of Election Day 2022. Here are some samples of recent media coverage of our efforts.

NEVADA

JTA: Republican and Democratic Jewish groups launch campaigns in close Nevada Senate race

The Republican Jewish Coalition’s political action committee has hired a field staffer in Nevada and is running a phone bank and door-knocking operation to benefit Adam Laxalt, according to RJC director Matt Brooks.

The RJC staged a rally for Laxalt in Las Vegas on Sept. 28, which was attended by Miri Adelson, the widow of Jewish casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, and one of the GOP’s leading donors.

…Voter research shows Laxalt and [Sen. Catherine] Cortez Masto essentially tied. Nevada’s Jewish community numbers close to 80,000 people, a constituency that could make the difference in a close election.

WISCONSIN

Washington Free Beacon: Mandela Barnes Praised Rev. Jeremiah Wright After Speech Accusing Israel of ‘Ethnic Cleansing’

Mandela Barnes, the Wisconsin Democratic Senate candidate, praised anti-Semitic pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright as "brilliant" after attending a speech in which the controversial preacher accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" and the United States of committing "war crimes."

…The Republican Jewish Coalition slammed Barnes for his support for Wright, saying this is "why Mandela Barnes's campaign for US Senate is imploding—because he is too radical for Wisconsin."

"Mandela Barnes's praise of Rev. Jeremiah Wright—who has a long and appalling history of trafficking anti-Semitic messages—as ‘brilliant' is shameful," said Sam Markstein, a spokesman for the Republican Jewish Coalition. "And unfortunately, the shame doesn't end there: When asked about his comments, Barnes doubled down, saying Rev. Wright gave ‘a good speech that night.'"

Markstein added that Barnes's comments weren't an "isolated incident" and noted that Barnes previously belonged to the Wisconsin chapter of Peace Action, which has promoted boycotts of Israel.

PENNSYLVANIA

Jewish Press: Republican Jewish Coalition Buys $1.5 Million in Ads for Pennsylvania Senate Race

The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) announced a $1.5 million TV ad buy in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, putting a spotlight on the incident when the Democratic nominee for the state’s U.S. Senate seat, John Fetterman, chased an unarmed, innocent black man with a shotgun in 2013.

…The two 30-second videos from the RJC began with a looped segment showing a bearded Fetterman being interviewed by local media and saying, “I may have broken the law.” The clip of Fetterman is followed by African-Americans expressing outrage at Fetterman’s actions and lack of remorse.

…The RJC endorsed Fetterman’s opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Republican nominee in the race.

The candidates have been locked in a competitive race, with Fetterman leading slightly in the polls, according to Real Clear Politics.

PENNSYLVANIA

Jewish Insider: In Conor Lamb’s Western Pennsylvania district, it’s anyone’s race

In Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District, which runs from the outskirts of Pittsburgh to the state’s western border, Democratic Navy veteran and cyber- and election-security expert Chris Deluzio faces Jeremy Shaffer, a Republican local official and software engineer. The district is rated as a toss-up by the Cook Political Report and has become a magnet for attention and spending from both sides of the aisle, as well as a barometer for working-class voters.

…In an industrial area of the state, Deluzio — a Bernie Sanders delegate at the 2020 Democratic National Convention — is playing up his support for unionized labor, which has boosted his campaign, and domestic manufacturing. Union labor comprised 13.5% of the Pennsylvania workforce in 2020.

…Shaffer, who has the backing of the Republican Jewish Coalition, told JI he favors continuing a campaign of sanctions, political pressure and “strategic actions when necessary” to counter Iran, in collaboration with U.S. allies.

…Shaffer called Israel the US’s “closest ally in the fight against terrorism and oppression in the Middle East,” as well as a “great partner” in scientific and educational fields, describing his support for the Jewish state as “deep and uncompromising.”

A police motorcycle burns during a protest over the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who died after being arrested by the Iran's "morality police", in Tehran.

Iran Protests Continue

Reuters reports that the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody last month are continuing and spreading, despite the violent response of the Iranian regime. The report calls it “one of the boldest challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution” and notes:

  • Tensions have been especially high in Kurdish regions and the regime in Tehran is sending tanks to Kurdish cities.

  • At least 185 people, including 19 minors, have been killed, hundreds injured, and thousands have been arrested by the security forces, according to rights groups. The government says more than 20 members of the security forces have been killed.

  • Dozens of universities are also currently on strike, with students playing a pivotal role in the protests.

  • In several neighborhoods of Tehran, such as Shahrak'e Gharb and Narmak, witnesses said people chanted "Death to Khamenei" from rooftops after nightfall. Videos on social media showed demonstrations in the cities of Isfahan and Qom with protesters cursing and throwing stones at security forces.

Short Takes

Inflation worse than expected at 8.2% in final pre-election report

Inflation clocked in worse than expected at 8.2% for the 12 months ending in September, according to the consumer price index, bad news for the country’s economic health. Worse, "core inflation," which strips out volatile food and energy prices, rose sharply in September. On an annual basis, it rose to a whopping 6.6%, the highest since 1982.

A dangerous new generation of militants Is rising in the West Bank

Jonathan Spyer writes at Newsweek: "Something new is brewing in the northern West Bank. In recent months, in the cities of Jenin and Nablus, the Israeli authorities have observed the emergence of novel and unfamiliar forms of armed Palestinian political organization. These new structures are only loosely associated with existing Palestinian political movements. They represent the coming of age of another generation. The result is a rising arc of violence."

The Palestinian Authority cannot meet the most basic requirement for statehood

Eric Mandel asserts that the Palestinian Authority is incapable of being a partner for peace in a “two state solution.” He writes that “the supreme test for a stable, sustainable and legitimate state is a monopoly on the use of force within the territories it controls.” But the PA cannot or will not confront the armed factions in the parts of Judea and Samaria under its control and it doesn’t control any of the Gaza Strip.
