Nikki Haley Announces White House Run

Yesterday, Nikki Haley formally announced that she is running for President. The former Governor of South Carolina and former US Ambassador to the United Nations has a strong record and a compelling personal story to carry into the race.

In her announcement remarks, Haley said:

"I stand before you as the daughter of immigrants, as the proud wife of a combat veteran and as the mom of two amazing children. I've served as governor of the great state of South Carolina and as America's ambassador to the United Nations. And above all else, I'm a grateful American citizen who knows our best days are yet to come if we unite and fight to save our country," she said.

"I have devoted my life to this fight, and I'm just getting started," she continued. "For a strong America, for a proud America, I am running for president of the United States of America."

A Jewish Insider article on how Jewish Republicans are responding to Haley’s announcement reports:

Norm Coleman, the RJC’s national chairman and a former Republican senator from Minnesota, said in an email to JI that Haley "has strong credibility in the Jewish community from her work at the UN" and for "being stalwart on challenging” the organization’s “anti-Israel bias."

As a "big tent" organization, the Republican Jewish Coalition does not choose amongst Republican primary candidates for federal races, with very rare exceptions. We will keep our members informed about the great Republicans running for the White House, the Senate, and the House in 2024.

Professor James Cavallaro was briefly the Biden nominee for a human rights post.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

On Monday, The Algemeiner dropped a bombshell report about Prof. James Cavallaro, whom President Joe Biden nominated last week to be a commissioner with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), an agency within the OAS.

The report from The Algemeiner revealed "a multi-year history of incendiary posts critical of US foreign policy, Israel, and pro-Israel elected officials."

"Bought. Purchased. Controlled," Cavallaro wrote alongside a link to an article about the funds raised for [US House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)] by AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups.

In other tweets, Cavallaro characterized Israel as an "apartheid state" and accused the US and Israel of "atrocities."

Cavallaro began deleting the offending tweets from his timeline on Monday after The Algemeiner reached out to him for comment.

Deleting his tweets came too late for Mr. Cavallaro. The Algemeiner reported on Tuesday that his nomination has been withdrawn:

Speaking at a State Department press briefing Tuesday afternoon, [State Department Spokesman Ned] Price told The Algemeiner that Cavallaro’s statements "clearly do not reflect US policy."

"They are not a reflection of what we believe, and they are inappropriate to say the least," Price added. "We have decided to withdraw our nomination of this individual."

Unfortunately, this activist for "human rights" continues to teach at Wesleyan University, Yale Law School and UCLA Law School, but at least he won’t be representing the United States in an international organization.

Short Takes

In Israel, Blinken is betting on the wrong peace process

Enia Krivine and Jonathan Conricus write at National Interest: "Washington wants to tether Israel’s warming relations with the wider Arab world to the progress of negotiations with the Palestinians that have gone nowhere for the last fifteen years. By linking these two efforts, [Antony] Blinken is likely guaranteeing the failure of both."

Senate Republicans move to disrupt Iran's support for Russia’s war on Ukraine

Adam Kredo at the Washington Free Beacon reports:"“The DISRUPT Act, spearheaded by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), would authorize sanctions on a range of Iranian regime entities that provide military support to Russia as it wages an unprovoked war in Ukraine, according to a copy of the new bill obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. Iran has emerged as a key military ally for Moscow, providing it with deadly drone technology that has been used to target sites across Ukraine."
