Antisemitism and the Radical Left
|
The horrifying murder of Israeli embassy staffers Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim last week continues to reverberate in the Jewish community.
Two respected authors have written columns that examine how radical leftist ideologies contributed to the shooting at the Capitol Jewish Museum.
In "A secular jihadi brings the intifada to Washington," Cliff May, founder and president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, writes that the DC shooter, a leftist activist, is "affiliated with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the ANSWER (for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition. Both groups hate the West, America, Israel and Jews. Does that qualify as intersectionality?"
The red keffiyeh (head scarf) the shooter waved after the murder is "associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine [PFLP], a secular, Marxist-Leninist [terrorist] organization. The group receives financial and military backing from Tehran."
In "From the BLM riots to the DC shooting in five short years," JNS Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Tobin traces the surge of antisemitism today to "the toxic myths of critical race theory, intersectionality, settler-colonialism and woke catechism of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)" that have come to dominate American society since the George Floyd riots of 2020.
Critical race theory wrongly puts Jews and Israel into the "white oppressor" class. The leftist criticism of Israel comes from "a conviction that Israel is a manifestation of racism, colonialism and oppression against people of color. That is why the mobs on college campuses and in the streets of American cities who have sought to make life intolerable for Jews act not merely out of extremism, but with a sense that their cause is just and linked to a great progressive crusade."
May writes that all of this is "part of a broader neo-Marxist assault on Western civilization and the values of the American republic that had been percolating on the far left for decades." And it led to the violent murder of an innocent young couple outside a Jewish museum in Washington, DC last week.

Feeding Gaza
|
The mainstream media had nothing good to say about Israel's decision to work with the US and the non-profit Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) to distribute food directly to Gazans, bypassing UNRWA and other groups that have failed to protect humanitarian aid supplies from the predation of Hamas terrorists.
Unfortunately for the media's narrative, the first days of the distribution went well, despite some disruptions. GHF said the temporary problems were caused by distressed people rushing one location and by Hamas-imposed blockades that tried to prevent people from accessing the distribution points. Order was quickly restored, and the distribution went forward. There were only two injuries, and no deaths reported. In all, 462,000 meals were distributed in the first two days.
Although the false claim that 14,000 Gazan children are about to die of hunger has been debunked, Hamas' efforts to commandeer food sent in for Gazan civilians have still not been widely enough reported. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated last week:
|
Since October 7th, Israel has sent 92,000 aid trucks into Gaza. That's right. 92,000 aid trucks. That includes 1.8 million tons of aid. 1.8 million tons of aid – more than enough food to feed everyone in Gaza.
Yet as we had let the aid come in, Hamas stole it. They took a huge chunk for themselves. The rest they sold at exorbitant prices to the Palestinian population. And then they used the money they stole to recruit new terrorists to continue their war against Israel.
Our goal from the start was to get food to Palestinian civilians, not to Palestinian terrorists.

DC mayor a no-show at Jewish unity gathering, after gunman kills Israeli embassy staffers
|
On May 22, some 15 hours after a gunman killed two Israeli embassy staffers outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, Muriel Bowser, the DC mayor, stated that she was sending "prayers and condolences" to relatives of the victims and that "we will not tolerate antisemitism."
Six days later, the mayor was a no-show at a Jewish unity and solidarity gathering held on the George Washington University campus on Wednesday night.
...Sam Markstein, the national political director at the Republican Jewish Coalition, wrote that Bowser’s decision not to attend the event on Wednesday was "cowardly and disgraceful."
"What in God’s name could have been more important for the mayor of DC, Muriel Bowser, than joining a Jewish community solidarity event on the eve of the Capital Jewish Museum’s reopening in the wake of horrific antisemitic murders last week," he stated.

Lewin: Federal prosecutions for antisemitic rioters
The Trump administration has justifiably condemned and penalized leading national universities such as Harvard and Columbia for failing to protect Jewish students’ civil rights. The time has come for the Justice Department to initiate federal criminal prosecution.
…Attorney General Pam Bondi should instruct the US attorneys for the Southern and Eastern districts of New York to activate a federal law that criminalizes violence directed against the "federally protected activities" of Jewish students at Columbia and Brooklyn College. Similar federal criminal cases should be initiated in other courts wherever anti-Israel protesters promote and engage in anti-Israel violence.
…Jewish students at Columbia and Brooklyn College were participating and enjoying federally financed educational programs at their institutions. The vandalism at Columbia’s Butler Library was "force" and "threat of force" that injured and intimidated students and university employees.

Bernstein: The American Jewish community’s blue city trap
David Bernstein writes that many Jewish communal institutions, especially legacy institutions in places like the New York/New Jersey area, south Florida, Chicago, and the Washington, DC area are "physically and culturally situated within progressive political ecosystems… [C]riticizing progressive norms—whether it’s identity-based ideology or acceptance of antisemitism in racial justice movements—can alienate their base and undermine their perceived legitimacy."
"…Turning against the progressive coalition would mean breaking relationships with city councils, school boards, and interfaith partners; losing credibility with younger, progressive Jews; and risking their funding base and social capital. Moreover, many of their own members have not pivoted politically. While concerned about antisemitism, they still support even the most progressive Democrats because of abortion rights, gun control, climate policy, or fear of Trumpism. This creates a tension: Jewish organizations that wish to sound the alarm about antisemitism from the left must do so without alienating their liberal constituents.
"…Jewish organizations thus remain in political alliances, arguably out of necessity, that no longer serve all their interests—but exiting those coalitions comes at a very high price.

Tratt: Jewish blood is spilled, and the Obamas stay silent
In the immediate aftermath of the heinous killing [of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington, DC], which occurred at a May 21 event hosted by The American Jewish Committee (AJC), leaders from around the world and across the ideological spectrum offered words of support to the Jewish community, and expressed outrage at the brutal slaying.
Notably, one high-profile couple who preferred to stay quiet following last week’s murders is former US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle [Obama], who co-hosts the IMO Podcast with her brother Craig Robinson.
… Whether it’s feckless statements or marked silence, there is perhaps no couple that bears more responsibility for indulging the Democratic Party’s tolerance of the antisemitic and anti-Israel movement than the former first couple.
… According to the Obamas’ intersectional worldview, Jewish victims are complicit in fomenting the antisemitic terror that now haunts them. Years after leaving the White House, they continue to permit this distorted thinking to enter the political consciousness of millions of Americans…
